Virginia, redistricting, and federalism
Virginia’s redistricting fight shows how both parties are trapped in an escalating battle to engineer congressional power. Virginia, which Kamala Harris won in 2020 by about five percentage points, is now being set up for a possible 10-1 Democrat advantage for U.S. House members. It’s a shot across the bow against self-government and democracy, which we are continually told is sacred. The outcome is all about coalescing more partisan power and control in D.C. over and against public service as a form of servant leadership.
Can this madness in the states be stopped? Federalism offers a way to lower the stakes, diffuse the conflict, and move political decision-making closer to the people it affects.
