‘The headlines will show you a country, but Americans will show you America’
I put together some of my own thoughts on the videos and threads popping up of foreign World Cup visitors praising America. But it’s hard to top this British man who simply said, “The headlines will show you a country, but Americans will show you America.”
In my own case, I do think living abroad for a number of years helped me to appreciate America more. The freedoms in this country are simply unmatched. It’s our job to cultivate and defend those freedoms.
I think one angle that might not be highlighted enough is that media, and sometimes sports media particularly, works to divide Americans upon cultural lines. But the World Cup is giving some a fresh perspective on many things that still unite Americans. Furthermore, America is so often better understand through ordinary encounters than national narratives.
The segment by Jesse Watters on Fox News was good.
