Healthcare in the states

In the new Healthcare Issue at American Habits, I wanted to remind readers that the real action isn’t in Washington, it’s in the states. From smarter Medicaid reforms, now allowed through the One Big Beautiful Bill, to price transparency, AI innovation, and patient-first care, our contributors show how state leaders can cut through the noise and start fixing what’s broken.

I opened my editor’s notes by pointing out that we keep hearing that Washington knows best on healthcare, but every time D.C. steps in, costs climb and the quality of care slips.

In this issue, I interviewed Avik Roy, and he cuts right to the heart of why healthcare reform can’t wait. If rising federal debt really is the defining threat of the next generation, and it is, as he says, then tackling healthcare costs isn’t optional; it’s such a huge driver of our debt. Roy’s challenge to lawmakers is simple: if you’re worried about the debt crisis, you can’t avoid the hard work of fixing the system that fuels it.
